ABUJA – The Federal Government has appealed to the United States to approach Nigeria’s security and counterterrorism efforts with greater understanding, while reaffirming commitment to working with Washington and other partners to eliminate terrorism.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, made the appeal on Wednesday at a news conference in Abuja.

He said Nigeria remains a vast, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious nation making steady progress in reforming its economy and strengthening its security architecture despite the persistent threats of terrorism and insurgency.

“We call on our American friends and partners to approach the Nigerian situation with an understanding of its complex realities,” Idris said.

“Nigeria is making significant strides in stabilising the nation and enhancing its security capabilities.”

He explained that the partnership between Nigeria and the U.S. had already yielded tangible results, including the delivery of 12 Super Tucano aircraft, which have boosted counterterrorism operations.

He added that another set of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters was being acquired for the Nigerian Air Force.

Highlighting the government’s progress in the anti-terrorism campaign, the Minister said several high-profile terror suspects were already facing prosecution.

He cited the case of Khalid Al-Barnawi, accused of masterminding the August 26, 2011 bombing of the United Nations complex in Abuja, which killed 20 people and injured more than 70 others.

Al-Barnawi and four other suspects, Mohammed Bashir Saleh, Umar Mohammed Bello (also known as Datti), Mohammed Salisu, and Yakubu Nuhu (also known as Bello Maishayi) are currently on trial.

Idris also mentioned the arraignment of five suspects for the June 5, 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, and the arrest of 26 others linked to the June 13 Yelwata massacre in Benue State, where dozens were killed and over 100 injured.

He said the Tinubu administration remains open to stronger cooperation with the U.S. and other allies in the fight against terrorism and in promoting peace and stability.

“The government of Nigeria welcomes constructive engagement, dialogue, and support from foreign partners, including the U.S., in addressing shared security challenges,” he said.

“We invite all our partners, both domestic and international, to join us in this noble endeavour anchored on trust, collaboration, and mutual respect.”

Idris reaffirmed that President Bola Tinubu is firmly committed to safeguarding the nation, boosting the economy, and strengthening military and intelligence capacity.

“On the current misreading and misjudging of Nigeria’s true security situation by the U.S., President Tinubu is taking the lead to resolve all areas of misunderstanding through diplomatic and political channels,” he added.
