Relatives of Deborah Okwori, an interior designer who was violently killed in her Lagos apartment on September 3, 2025, are demanding that her self-confessed assailant, Lintex Ogale, face a full capital murder trial rather than receive a lenient sentence.

Ogale, who was apprehended at the crime scene within Dele Adedugbe Estate, has remained in detention. Following his failure to appear in court on January 30, Deborah’s family discovered an effort to secure a plea agreement that would downgrade the indictment to manslaughter, handing him a 21-year prison term rather than life imprisonment or capital punishment.

According to Deborah’s sister, Hope, and her close companion, Monica Agbane, the former partners had previously severed their turbulent relationship after a history of abuse. Hope recounted that approximately four months prior to the murder, Ogale had physically assaulted Deborah using a charging cable. Even after she blocked all contact, he found a way back into her orbit through an interior decoration assignment for an acquaintance. On the fateful day, Ogale bypassed estate checkpoints, scaled an adjoining wall, and repeatedly attacked Deborah, inflicting 22 stab wounds that ultimately claimed her life.

To stop any negotiated settlement, the Okwori family submitted a formal objection dated October 2 to the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. They likewise reached out to the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Women Forum for advocacy.

In the petition, the family stated that the post-mortem report verified 22 stab wounds, underscoring that the attack was a calculated, sustained, and extraordinarily brutal assault rather than an impulsive reaction. They asserted that granting a plea concession would trivialise such an atrocious act and inflict further anguish on the bereaved. The document also noted Ogale’s dismissive courtroom posture and recalled instances where he allegedly boasted to Hope that her family was powerless against him. The letter bore the signatures of the victim’s father, Moses Okwori, alongside Hope, her uncles Jasper Otumala and Monday Omirenyi, and her cousin Isaiah Ode.

Speaking on the legal developments, Agbane disclosed that the plea bargain proposal was introduced during a September 30 court session without prior notice to Deborah’s kin. She stressed that Ogale deliberately travelled from Ogba with murderous intent, chased the victim back inside when she attempted to escape, collapsed both her lungs with repeated stabbings, and feigned death in her blood until estate guards intervened—circumstances they argue warrant nothing less than a murder conviction.
