A Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report published by the US Department of State has labelled Nigeria a Tier 2 country.

This means the government of Nigeria is yet to put the minimum standards required for the elimination of human trafficking in place.

According to a recent report published by the agency, several human trafficking victims, mostly ladies who are of Nigerian decent, have been identified in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

25 of the victims explained that traffickers lured them to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with promises of employment, only to force them into debt and subject them to threats, violence and sexual servitude.

Presently, the Kafala System, a “sponsorship” system that is operational in the UAE and other gulf countries, grants employers complete control over migrant workers’ legal status.

The system leaves migrant domestic workers at the mercy of their sponsors at all times.

“Sponsors often withhold their identity documents, have control over all aspects of their lives, and subject them to both exploitation and violation of their human rights,” said Fernanda Valienti, the media officer of International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF), a global organisation of domestic and household workers.

“If the employment relationship ends, even in cases of abuse, workers risk losing their residency status and consequently detention and deportation.”
