BENIN CITY: In a bold move to strengthen food security and boost agricultural productivity, the Edo State Government has commenced the deployment of newly procured bulldozers to Ekpoma under the second phase of the ‘Back to Farm’ Initiative of Project SHINE.

Also, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Jerry Uwangue, has urged ministry staff to be more proactive, results-driven, and accountable in implementing government policies.

Speaking to journalists, Dr Uwangue explained that the heavy-duty machinery is being transported on low-bed trucks for safe and efficient delivery to project sites, where it will be deployed for large-scale land clearing, farm preparation, and expansion of arable land.

“The equipment will be strategically shared and deployed across the three senatorial districts to ensure equitable mechanised support and maximise impact statewide,” he said.

He said the initiative aims to remove longstanding barriers that hinder access to cultivatable land for farmers and agribusiness operators, enhance food production, create employment opportunities, and drive sustainable economic growth. “The deployment of these bulldozers is a critical milestone in the second phase of the Back to Farm Initiative, which is at the heart of Project SHINE’s mission to transform agriculture in Edo State,” he added.

The commissioner also highlighted the state’s investment in modern farming equipment, mechanisation, and infrastructure as part of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s broader agenda to revolutionise the sector.

“It is not just about machinery, it is about ensuring that our people, especially farmers and agribusiness stakeholders, have the tools, land, and support to succeed,” he said.

Earlier, Dr Uwangue met with staff of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security at the Agriculture Hub in Benin City, calling on workers to embrace proactivity, professionalism, and teamwork to justify the government’s investment.

He emphasised that the success of Project SHINE and the Back to Farm Initiative hinges on the efficiency and dedication of ministry staff in translating policy into tangible results.

“The government has provided modern equipment and resources; now it is our duty to deliver measurable outcomes in food production, land development, and rural empowerment,” he told the staff.

Dr Uwangue also proposed the creation of a committee to organise periodic bonding and recreational activities to strengthen unity, morale, and collaboration among workers.

An interactive session followed, during which staff raised operational concerns, shared ideas, and asked questions on improving productivity and service delivery.

The Director of Agricultural Services, Mr Ogunbor David, thanked Governor Monday Okpebholo for providing additional bulldozers, assuring the commissioner that the ministry is fully prepared to drive the food sustainability agenda in Edo State.

The Director of Administration, Mrs Odiai Franca, commended Dr Uwangue for organising the ministry’s first-ever Christmas package and party for staff.
