ABUJA – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the nation’s political class to renew their commitment to justice, fairness and good governance as the country celebrates its 65th Independence anniversary.
In a statement jointly signed by its President, Yahaya Alhassan, and National Secretary, Achike Chude, the union said Nigeria’s journey to nationhood, though less bloody than in some African countries, came through the sacrifices of nationalists and the vibrancy of the press that mobilised citizens to end colonial rule.
The NUJ noted that despite the country’s vast resources and the resilience of its people, Nigeria has yet to fulfill its full potential due to insecurity, poor governance, economic hardship and the mass exodus of professionals abroad.
The union, however, stressed that Nigeria remains a nation of promise, blessed with diversity and capable of harmonious coexistence if institutions are strengthened and fairness is upheld.
Reaffirming its commitment to national unity, the NUJ said: “Despite despair and pessimism, the ship of the Nigerian state can still be righted with everyone doing their bit.”
It pledged to continue advocating for peace, equity and justice in the pursuit of a more prosperous Nigeria.
